This advanced graphing calculator is packed with more features than you might know how to use. The TI-89 lets you perform the expected functions of an advanced calculator--basic math, algebra, calculus, graphs, matrices, and statistical functions. However, you can also do cool stuff like create animations as well as graph 3-D rotations and plot contours.

The manual that ships with the TI-89 is a killer, presenting over 500 pages of clear, concise definitions, function explanations, examples, drawings, and appendices. It's divided into well-organized chapters that cover all the major features of the calculator. Graphing functions include basic function graphing, parametric graphing, polar graphing, sequence graphing, 3-D graphing, and differential-equation graphing. Additionally, the TI-89 includes symbolic manipulation, constants and measurement units, statistics and data plots, a numeric solver, a text editor, programming capabilities, tables, a split-screen function, variable management, and the ability to link to other calculators or a computer.

The large, color-coded keys are easy to read and find--a nice touch on such a feature-heavy calculator. An improvement over earlier Texas Instruments graphing calculators is the addition of one-touch X, Y, and Z variable keys. The large LCD screen is also adjustable to your environment; we were able to view it clearly in a variety of lighting. The TI-89 comes with an attached, hard slide cover that protects it from getting knocked around in a backpack.

The TI-89's flash technology allows you to upgrade to future software versions so you don't have to continually invest in new calculators. The whopping 500 K of memory is more than sufficient for your stored functions, programs, and data. You can also create custom menus or use the default menu. Another cool feature is the Program Editor, which gives you the ability to program. The TI-89 also comes with an input/output port and cable, letting you synch up with other TI-89s or TI-92s. --Jill Lightner

Pros:

  • Large keys
  • Easy-to-read LCD
  • Includes input/output port and cable
  • Allowed in AP, SAT, PSAT/NMSQT tests
  • Comprehensive, illustrated manual

Cons:

  • None

Is the ti-89 the right ti for me?
By Kevin John Mlnarik (Nebraska)

"I'm a Senior Electrical Engineering student, and I've owned nearly the entire ti-8X line. Based on my expierince the ti-89 is worth the money for two distinct groups of people.
1) Lazy people. The 89, when used properly, does almost all of the Algebra that one would encounter in non-calculus based algebra class. It also does most of the calculus that one would see in their first three semesters of college calculus. Thanks to this machine I've forgotten huge amounts of the calculus that I once knew.
2) People who need its power. This calculator is almost neccesary for Electrical Engineering majors at my University. It can do impressive amounts of complex domain algebra, numeric differential equations, symbolic algebra and calculus etc.

Who shouldn't buy this calculator?
1) People who aren't willing to learn how to use it, and don't need its power. The 89 is fairly intuitive, but still takes some getting used to. If you don't want to spend a nerdy afternoon learning to use your new investment, then you're cooler than me, and should get something cheaper.
2) Lazy People. It's really really tempting to not learn something in a Math class because your calculator can do the operation. In the long run you will get in trouble doing this and the 89 is a very tempting tool in the hands of the indolent."

Great.
By A Customer

"I must say that the TI-89 calculator is the best calculator currently available. The TI-89 is identical to the TI-92 Plus, except for that it comes in a vertical platform and it does not have the Geometry application. However, with the 89's flash memory, you will be able to obtain free downloads from the Internet to upgrade your calculator. Also, for a small charge, you will soon be able to download the CABRI-Geometry application for the 89, so the TI-89 is definetely a better purchase than the 92 (although it does not have the QWERTY keyboard, which in my opinion is worthless.) Some of the features of the 89:
* Statistics/List Editor (free app downloadable from ti.com) * Differential Equations * Symbolic Algebra/Calculus * Metric Units * Equation Solver * Function, Parametric, Polar Graphing * 3-D Graphing, Rotation, and Contours * Text Editor * Pretty Print (expressions appear exactly as they would on the chalkboard) ..and much more."

The best calculator out there
By  Ognir

"The Ti-89 is a truly powerful calculator - one of the most powerful on the market. After using this calculator even once, I'd bet that many people who swear by their Ti-83 Plus will never pick it up again.

Texas Instruments has taken all the calculating power of the Ti-92 and put it into an average sized calculator. Math students no longer have to tote around the bulky and unwiedly Ti-92; they can simply slip a Ti-89 into their bookbags and be done with it.

The functions available on this calculator are truly amazing. You can factor. You can integrate. You can simplify complex exponential problems. This calculator can perform almost any mathematical calculation you can name. And yet, it's small enough to fit into your pocket.

Everything on the Ti-89 is set up in a logical, easily figured-out manner, making it easy to use during math tests. In fact, I think that the Ti-89 may be the easiest calculator of the Ti-8x series to use.

As a calculator programmer, I was very impressed with the programming capabilities of the Ti-89. Unlike the Ti-83, where a programmer has to wade through several menus to even find the 'If' operator, the Ti-89 allows the user to simply type commands into the program manager, saving loads of time. Equally appealing is the fact that Ti-89 Basic is, in my opinion, the closest to "real" programming languages like QBasic than any of the other Ti-8x Basic languages.

There is almost nothing this calculator can't do. I highly recommend it for anyone who's looking for the most powerful calculator on the market."
